Backyard Flock Preparedness - Chicken Disaster & Evacuation Planning

Your chickens deserve preparedness planning too!

When people think about disaster preparedness, they usually think about human evacuation plans, companion animals, and emergency supplies inside the home. But for many families, preparedness also extends into the backyard—where chickens provide food security, companionship, and daily rhythms of care.

Backyard flock preparedness is a favorite topic within the World Congress on Planetary Health series - from social and health wellbeing to public (human) health intersections, the health of ‘backyard flocks’ and the poultry that are in close proximity to human homes, spaces, and families.

If animals depend on us, they deserve a plan.

This community interview was recorded for the June 2025 World Congress event and continues to educate our community with each viewing. For more information and details, especially on product suggestions, see the full article on ChickenClucks here.

Preparedness Is Not Just for Disasters

Preparedness for chickens is not limited to rare catastrophic events. It includes being ready for:

  • sudden injuries or predator encounters

  • unexpected transport or confinement

  • feed or water disruptions

  • extreme weather events

  • evacuations where time and clarity are limited

Preparedness is about reducing uncertainty before it becomes urgent. By practicing with your animal family members (chickens or others!) you can reduce their (and your!) stress, and improve the likelihood of successfully evacuating in an actual disaster event.
